PAY THE ARTISTS is a performance inspired by a dress worn by US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at the Met Gala 2021. She took advantage of the visibility and prestige of the event to broadcast a political message on her evening gown.

To raise awareness of artists’ working conditions, Elsa Leydier wore a dress inspired by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’ for the opening week of Rencontres d’Arles 2023. It was embossed with the message 'Pay The Artists', a reminder of the lack of consideration (particularly economic) for the artist’s profession.
